StyleItaliano has a mission to set excellent standards while simplifying protocols within the vast world of endodontics. This is the philosophy that Riccardo Tonini will discuss in the Special Interest Theatre at the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show 2018.

In his presentation entitled, “Make it simple, follow the StyleItaliano endodontics philosophy”, Riccardo plans to share his tips and tricks for simplifying daily protocols and show delegates how to make endodontic treatment feasible, repeatable and more teachable. When asked to summarise the areas he plans to cover he said:

“I would like to address some of the problems that dentists face and discuss certain issues, such as how to anesthetise teeth that need endodontic therapy in a predicable way and how to manage a ‘Hot Tooth’ without increasing patient pain.

“I also want to talk about cleaning and shaping; we are presented with a wide range of different root anatomies on a daily basis, which can make it difficult to establish a glide path. I will discuss whether one should directly approach canals with rotary files or if this is a high-risk choice?

“In modern endodontics, a proper irrigation procedure should be the main part of treatment. Cleaning and disinfecting canals takes a long time and irrigants also need time to maximise their effectiveness. There is a big difference between the time one requires to shape roots canals and the time needed to clean them in an effective way. For instance, sometimes it is possible to shape a canal in a few minutes, but it is essential to take at least 30 minutes to achieve a proper clean before packing all the doors that separate the endodontium from periodontal region.

“As delegates are aware, many protocols have been suggested in the endodontic literature and my lecture offers us a chance to examine these papers and deliberate over a few questions such as: What clinical disinfection protocols exist? Which protocol is the best to achieve complete disinfection? What is the right sequence of using different irrigants, considering their concentration, activation time and chemical composition, to obtain maximum effect in the shortest time?

“I also plan to cover iatrogenic errors – how to avoid them and how to repair them. My step-by-step approach and useful tips will help delegates to make treatment simple, as well as feasible and repeatable.

“My lecture will also cover mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), which is one of the most researched materials in dentistry. Outcomes tend to be good and it is considered the ideal material for sealing the pathways of communication between the root canal system and its surrounding tissues. Indeed, it remains the material of choice for applications such as apical plug, pulp capping, apical barrier formation for teeth with necrotic pulps and open apexes, perforation repair, apexification and retrospective root filling during surgery. Consequently, many clinical investigations have been performed evaluating MTA for each of these purposes. Further to this, my presentation will investigate the sequences, devices and protocols suggested, describe different clinical techniques and detail the correct use of MTA.

“From literature we know that MTA is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, non genotoxic, biocompatible, insoluble in tissue fluids, dimensionally stable and in presence of moisture its sealing ability is not affected. However, we have also to consider how research shapes innovation for clinicians and patients and how new knowledge is transferred into practice. We will discuss MTA and compare it with other new generation materials such as Bioceramics, not just in clinical terms, but also from laboratory research.”

Riccardo Tonini is just one of the leading professionals speaking within the Special Interest Theatre on Saturday 19th May.
