Melonie Prebble is an experienced dental therapist and hygienist who has been instrumental in developing popular and professional hygienist services at two practices, one in St John’s Wood and another at Welwyn. She graduated from The London Hospital in 1995 and has been enhancing her skills and contributing to the dental industry ever since. As a regular contributor to dental journals and a national speaker, Melonie enjoys working and learning from other professionals as well as embracing new technologies. Here she offers her thoughts and views on the new CALCIVIS imaging system:

“As a dental therapist with 23 years’ experience, my passion has always been in assisting my patients to understand their individual risk to oral diseases and to plan and deliver tailored dental care that suits their individual needs.

“Early intervention, as all clinicians know, is the key to better prevention and minimally invasive dentistry and it has been suggested that the best indicator for caries risk is the presence of past caries. Yet, in my opinion, this only serves to highlight a huge gap in the way that clinicians risk assess and prevent caries.

“For many years I have felt that research on caries detection should focus on developing systems that provide real-time chair side detection and more accurate monitoring of lesion activity and severity over time. Consequently, when I was approached in the summer of 2017 to become a beta tester for the CALCIVIS imaging system, I was excited to be part of the process and most importantly, I recognised an opportunity to potentially bridge a gap, which I always knew existed.

“I have used caries detectors in the past but nothing I have previously used has been comparable in terms of predictability and reliability or has had the ability to detect active demineralisation as early as the CALCIVIS device.

“As we are all well aware, prevention is about early detection and the CALCIVIS imaging system is able to identify active demineralisation on the tooth surface with no clinical signs, which is very encouraging in my mission to intervene at the very earliest stage possible. Seeing a bioluminescence map of demineralisation earlier than would normally be possible can be a real wake up call, but also, it is an interesting and useful tool with which to clearly see and confirm my findings.

“Patient engagement was phenomenal while I was using the CALCIVIS imaging system. It was so much easier for them to see and understand what was going on and they were definitely more motivated and eager to improve their oral hygiene habits, modify their behaviour and seriously consider remineralisation solutions.

“CALCIVIS is a first for UK dentistry and it has been very exciting to be involved in the concept and development stages of the system. I would most certainly recommend this imaging system to dental professionals who like myself, are passionate about prevention and minimally invasive dentistry.”
