The British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) is delighted to announce that Anna Seymour has won the National Student of the Year Award 2019, which was sponsored by Optident.

Anna was awarded the BSDHT Student prize for her outstanding undergraduate project, which has high clinical relevance to the role of modern dental hygienists and dental therapists. Her hard work was also recognised in editing down her 5,000-word project in order to submit it for publication in the 2019 BSDHT Annual Clinical Journal and disseminate her research findings to the wider profession. In addition, Anna submitted this project for the Annual Poster Competition at the Oral Health Conference (OHC) 2018.

All in all, the development of one of her final year assessments demonstrates Anna’s passion for motivating other dental care professionals to contribute to the research arena. Being so early on in her career, it is inspiring that she is already giving back to the profession in such a way.

As part of Anna’s application for the BSDHT Student of the Year Award, her tutor, Dr Marina Harris – Senior Lecturer and Periodontology Lead at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy – sung her praises, saying:

“Anna is a delightful, enthusiastic individual who we at the Academy predict will be a shining light for our profession. Anna is well-respected by staff and students alike and has been a joy to have as firstly a student, and now a valuable peer. Anna has stayed true to her heart and is now providing all her newly found skills and expertise as a dental therapist in the occupation she always longed for. We are all very proud of her!”

Sponsoring the Award, a spokesperson from Optident added:

“Optident is delighted to have supported the 2018 Student of the Year Award. There were some fantastic and well deserving participants this year – it was extremely difficult to pick just one winner. Dental hygiene and therapy is a profession that we have always been actively involved in and we are proud to be a part of this significant accolade.”

Many congratulations Anna!
