It is widely believed that patient engagement is vital for long-term positive clinical outcomes and improving the overall dental experience. So if you’re trying to think of new ways in which you could improve your patients’ oral health and service all at the same time, you might want to refine the way in which you engage with the clients that walk through your door.

Of course, it’s not always easy to grab patients’ attention and engage with them at a personal level, but there are a few strategies you can implement that might make them sit up and pay attention to your practice and their oral health.

Captivate and communicate

You know that communication is essential to the success of your business, but can you put your hand on your heart and say that you are communicating with your patients as regularly and as effectively as you can be? If the answer is yes then hats off to you, but the chances are that improvements could be made. It’s like Winston Churchill once said, “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” To optimise patient engagement and provide the best service you can, then, you might need to up your game. That may mean increasing the frequency of contact so that your patients receive monthly updates about all the latest news, offers and services that you offer, rather than hearing from you every six months when it’s time for their check-up. As part of that you might need to rethink your method of communication.

Generic letters with uninspiring content that have been sent in the post or by email are likely to go in the bin. Instead, try short, sharp and to the point text messages that your patients can more easily look at on the go – you have a better chance of these being read and remembered by patients.

Get online

Platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are another great way to engage with patients, as they allow you to connect using a fun, personal and lively approach that showcases your practice’s identity and personality. From tagging and check-ins to photos, multimedia and creative content, there are no end of opportunities with how you can use social media to boost patients’ interest in dentistry and your practice. Some patients think dentistry is boring – prove them wrong!

Be fun

The sky is the limit with what you can do with your practice and how you can reach out to patients. Hold a raffle, host a charity fancy dress day or give out prizes to the most improved patient – do anything that will make visiting the dentist more fun and appealing. If you wanted to go the extra mile you could even put on a social event such a fete with live music, games, stalls, face painting and a demonstration stand with fun, oversized props to teach children about oral health techniques. It’s a great way to showcase your business and engage with patients one-on-one, away from the dental chair.

Stand out

Because how you market and brand your business says a lot about your practice and the service that you offer, it’s always worth coming up with new methods that make a statement and help you to stand out from the crowd. Have a new piece of all-singing, all-dancing equipment that you think will capture your patients’ interest? Then use all your available outlets to shout about it from the rooftops! One of your dentists won an award or gained a new qualification? Tell your patients about it!

Don’t be afraid to give your practice a personality either, as creating a recognisable appearance and brand is a great way of capturing patients’ attention. You can do this through simple touches such as revamping your team’s uniforms. Swap dreary, insipid, unflattering garments that your patients won’t remember, for vivid, eye-catching patterns and colours and you’ll no doubt see the difference straightaway.

The Pastelli uniforms available from RPA Dental come in a huge array of visually striking designs and shades that will help you to make a bold statement. There’s even the option to have the Italian made garments personalised with your practice’s logo and font, which is sure to grab your patients’ attention.

Altogether, there are a number of simple yet effective techniques that can be implemented to engage with your patients. By doing so you could not only improve your service and boost the performance of your business, but optimise long-term clinical outcomes and the oral health of your patients.
