As 2018 draws to a close, many of you will no doubt be casting your minds back to the highs and lows of the last 12 months – what went well for your practice, what didn’t. Reviewing the year is a great way of monitoring your businesses’ progress and making sure you’re on the right track towards achieving your goals. It will also give you a much clearer idea of what to expect moving forward into 2019, and what actions you will need to take in the New Year and beyond.

Ask yourself questions such as: did I achieve what I had set out to do in 2018? Am I on target for meeting my long-term aims? Equally, give some thought as to where you plan to be in 5, 10, 15 years time and so on. It is likely that your objectives will change and evolve over time so it is integral that you review regularly – and what better time than the New Year?

A good place to start is to look at your productivity. If you’re an NHS or mixed practice are you on track to meet your UDA target for the financial year-end 2018/19? If not, do you know the reason for this? It may not be a bad idea to assess staff performance to make sure that the whole team is practising as they should be and to the expected level, even if you are projected to complete all of your allocated UDAs. This will help to ensure that you’re on track for 2019/2020.

If you’re a private practice, take stock of your yearly work output. Do your books indicate that your practice is working to its maximum capability? Whatever the answer, the New Year provides the perfect opportunity to review your team’s performance and put plans in place for the year ahead. This will allow you in turn to discover each individual’s own career goals and could unexpectedly open the door to a business opportunity that was previously not on your radar. You may unearth, for instance, that one of your staff has aspirations to undertake specialist training to become an implantologist. That could be good news for your practice, especially if you’re looking to expand your treatment list and patient base. Plus, staff appraisals will help your team to feel valued, which as you know is great for productivity!

Now is also a great time to assess the profitability and cost efficiency of your practice. Granted you will already know what financial state your practice is in and how the business has performed over the last year, but sitting down and going through your books with a fine-tooth comb is never a bad idea. For one, you might spot an area where a saving could be made or realise that more investment is needed in another aspect of the business as you move forward into 2019. Most importantly, though, it will give you a chance to get to grips with the minutiae of your income and outgoings and make a practical plan for the months ahead, so that you can hit the ground running in the New Year.

This should hopefully free you up to focus on more exciting ventures and think of innovative new ways to improve your practice for both your patient base and your team. This could be anything from arranging quality training courses for your staff to improve their skills and therefore the care they provide, to investing time and money into the appearance and functionality of the surroundings.

The latter is a particularly pertinent consideration, as the way your practice looks and operates can have a huge impact on attracting and retaining employees and patients. For your workforce, it’s about providing a working environment in which they can practice safely, effectively and ergonomically every day. The better the workflow and equipment, the better they will be able to perform. As for patients, they want to know that they’re getting value for money. If your practice is attractive, comfortable and equipped with the latest technologies they are far more likely to remain a loyal customer – and recommend you to a friend!
