Dentine hypersensitivity is a fairly common condition that is painful and uncomfortable for patients. It is believed to be caused through loss of protective enamel by means of erosion, attrition or abrasion, leading to dentine exposure. Gingival recession is another possible cause; whether due to a hard tooth brushing technique, soft tissue surgery, tooth preparation, excessive flossing or periodontal disease.
Management and improvement of dentine hypersensitivity can be difficult for dental hygienists and dental therapists. It requires regular reviews and careful monitoring, as well as selection of appropriate and effective products that can help to alleviate symptoms for the patient and address the root cause of the condition.
This is a field in which David Gillam – Clinical Reader in Translational Research in relation to dentistry at the Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and a Specialist Periodontist – has a wealth of experience. In the past, he has worked at King’s Dental Hospital teaching both dental hygienists and undergraduate students, and he was a Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow and University Lecturer at the Eastman Dental Institute for Oral HealthCare Sciences for around 10 years. David’s research focused on dentine hypersensitivity and he has since been involved with both laboratory and clinical studies on various oral care products.
David will be among the highly esteemed speakers addressing dental hygienists and dental therapists at the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show 2019. Speaking in the dedicated Hygienist & Therapist Symposium, he will be sharing his extensive expertise on the topic of dentine sensitivity.
“I will provide an overview on the management of dentine hypersensitivity, including current treatment modalities and recent innovations in products which have been designed to treat the condition efficiently,” he says.
“Dentine hypersensitivity is a troublesome condition for the patient and can have an impact of their quality of life. For the clinician, the condition can be difficult to manage effectively and as such, an awareness of the range of products and techniques that are available to treat dentine hypersensitivity can be of benefit.
“There are a number of challenges facing clinicians in this area. For example, it would appear that dentine hypersensitivity may be under diagnosed in daily practice and as such, the condition may not be identified unless prompted by the patient. One of the other possible concerns is that there does not appear to be one universally agreed product or technique that can resolve dentine hypersensitivity. It is therefore important to acknowledge that there are limitations to the effectiveness of any solutions used.”
