Kathryn McKenna will be speaking in the BDA Theatre at the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show this May Kathryn McKenna. Her session – “Recommendations for the dental management of patients with long QT syndrome (LQTS)” – will be held on Friday 17that 10.30am.

Kathryn introduces the topic:

“Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a rare but potentially life threatening disorder of the heart’s conduction system. The QT interval on the ECG is prolonged, causing ventricular tachyarrhythmia. Patients may experience syncope, seizures, palpitations and torsades de pointes (ventricular tachycardia), which can lead to cardiac arrest or sudden cardiac death.

“Physical activity, auditory stimuli, emotional stress or certain drugs commonly prescribed in dentistry, such as adrenaline in local anaesthetic can illicit these EGC changes. It’s important for dentists to understand the disease and the drugs to avoid in order to reduce the risk of complications when treating patients with LQTS.

“During my lecture at the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show, I will outline what LQTS is, how it is managed, the dental implications of the condition and recommendations for safe care in dental practice. The aim is to update delegates on new guidance in the field, aiding and reassuring dentists to help them continue providing safe care for patients with LQTS. Delegates should develop a better understanding of what LQTS is and how it is managed successfully.”

Completely free for delegates to attend, the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show 2019 will offer hours of enhanced CPD and copious networking opportunities for all members of the dental team. Presented by CloserStill Media and the British Dental Association, the educational programme will cover a wide range of relevant and interesting topics. The trade exhibition will also feature more than 400 dental manufacturers and suppliers keen to demonstrate their latest and greatest innovations.
