Dr Shanon Patel will be presenting a session entitled “Managing endodontic complications” in the BDA Theatre at the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show this May. A Consultant Endodontist and Senior Lecturer for the Endodontic Postgraduate Unit at King’s College London Dental Institute, Dr Patel’s background as a clinical academic has led him to publish over 70 papers, as well as three national and European guidelines in dental imaging.
Currently, he is involved with clinical research in dental trauma, microbiology, CBCT, endodontic treatment outcomes and bioceramic endodontic materials.
Dr Patel has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with professionals. About his session in the BDA Theatre, he comments:
“Accurate diagnosis and treatment planning are the foundations for predictable endodontics, which in turn is likely to result in successful outcomes. Of course, it is important to keep up-to-date with contemporary techniques and the latest materials in the field. However, the basic principles remain essential; good anaesthesia, rubber dam, location of all root canals, disinfection and sealing of the complex root canal system will result in more predictable outcomes. Identification of all the root canals and an appreciation of complex anatomy will also facilitate appropriate file selection, instrumentation and thorough disinfection of the entire root canal system. In addition, the use of magnification and ultrasonics can greatly improve locating root canal entrances.
“It can be a challenge to instrument curved root canals, even for seasoned endodontists. Top tips to effortlessly instrument curved canals will be explained during my session.
“Another challenge is deciding whether a tooth should be retained (root treated) or extracted and replaced with an implant. Using a systematic approach to evaluate the tooth, as well as contextualising each case, makes treatment planning easier and less stressful. Choosing how and when to restore endodontically treated tooth also can have an impact on the longevity of endodontically root-treated teeth. My BDA Theatre seminar aims to clarify these issues.”
Dr Patel’s session will be presented on Friday 17thMay at 14.30 in the BDA Theatre. The British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show is free for all members of the dental team to attend and registration is available online. The BDA Theatre will be just one educational feature at the event, which will offer hours of enhanced CPD and copious learning opportunities, as well as an extensive trade exhibition. Make sure you don’t miss out!
