As the popularity of GDP orthodontics continues to rise, it’s no wonder that the Short-Term Ortho Lounge was such a hit at the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show this year. Delegates were keen to uncover the secrets to successful treatment by listening to key professionals leading the way in the field.

A highlight of the programme was Jaswinder Gill’s session on delivering safe and ethical care. He discussed how short-term orthodontics completely changed his life and emphasised the huge demand for treatment by estimating that 80% of adult patients could benefit from care. As a top provider of Six Month Smiles, Jaswinder demonstrated the system itself and provided all the key information delegates might need before presenting case studies to show the results that can be achieved in a relatively short period of time. He was very clear that the goal of short-term orthodontics is not to achieve the same as with comprehensive treatment, and he went on to discuss the Confidex digital treatment planning software available with the system.

Another session to draw a crowd was Monik Vasant’s lecture on “Integrating the Invisalign System into Minimal Invasive Dentistry”. Giving delegates the chance to broaden their understanding of different systems on the market, Monik commented that “We are in this minimally invasive era – it’s all about technology and being digitally driven”. He presented anterior alignment orthodontics as a solution for improving smile symmetry and uneven gingival levels, ultimately for the enhancement of  aesthetics. Digital advancements have made this much easier for the GDP, while also improving communication with the patient. As Monik said, “A picture says 1,000 words”, and utilising digital images can help to give the patient a different perspective, significantly improving their understanding.

Ensuring delegates had access to a broad range of products, Milad Shadrooh (A.K.A. The Singing Dentist) presented a highly amusing session on Smilign, discussing this particular system and demonstrating some of his own cases.

Dental hygienist, Mary Conway-Kelly said:

“The Singing Dentist was very funny – he had everyone laughing and the session was informative.”

In fact, feedback from delegates across the show was fantastic, with many individuals enjoying the opportunity to learn new things specifically within their areas of interest.

Duncan Harris, dentist from Stokesley Dental Practice, commented:

“I’ve gained great information from the stands and the lectures. It’s a great event for getting CPD and it’s worth coming every year.”

Priya Mistry, associate dentist from Wood & Associates Dental Care, said:

“This has been a great show, with a lot of interesting talks and lectures. I have learnt a lot and gained CPD and I will definitely return next year!”

Whether delegates sought education in orthodontics, endodontics, implants or any other area of dentistry, the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show 2019 catered to all.
