Domingos Mamede, dental implant surgeon and cosmetic dentist at the Advanced Oral Health Centre in St Ives, is one of many clinicians to have started their dental implant journey with the PG Cert in Implant Dentistry from Ucer Education. Here he shares what he thought of the training and support, and how it provided the ideal foundation for a thriving career.
“Originally from Portugal, I joined an NHS practice when I moved to Manchester. Although I wanted to continue my studies, I was unsure what path to take and which field to focus on. After some research into what was available, dental implants became of interest and I took the one-year PG Cert in Implant Dentistry with Ucer Education. It seemed to be the best available at the time and it has only improved further since then.
“I found it very useful to be able to start my journey in dental implantology with such a great mentor as Professor Ucer. He and his team provided an interesting and guided insight into the world of dental implantology and from that moment on, I knew I wanted to advance in this field.
“For any dentist starting out with dental implants, it’s important to first learn the theory and science behind the procedures and to then gain some practical experience. Unfortunately, I think a lot of courses in the UK lack adequate hands-on opportunities, which can leave dentists without the skills or confidence to actually go on and place any implants. This is not only a waste of money, but it also prevents the individual from progressing in their career.
“I believe the Ucer Education course overcomes this challenge very well by offering a good balance of theory and practical learning – it now even enables delegates to start placing implants under supervision in the ICE state-of-the-art facilities. The training is also not biased to one implant system or another, covering a range of systems and digital technologies. This gives you the flexibility to choose the system that is genuinely best for you when you start providing implants in practice.
“Following completion of the year-long course, I was ready to advance and I went on to complete an MSc in Dental Implantology. I really only have very good things to say about Professor Ucer and Ucer Education. I think there is little structure for professional development in implantology in the UK, but Ucer Education provides the skills, support and confidence for individuals to grow in a responsible and very good way.”
