Dr Martine Freestone recently discovered a new restorative technique that offers new treatment possibilities for a range of patients.

I perform a lot of restorative dentistry in practice and I sought training to broaden and develop my skills. The Bioclear Method was introduced to me as part of a general restorative and cosmetic dentistry course I took.

I found this technique really interesting as it offers a different approach to restorations. Filling all in one instead of layering reduces the chance of voids and facilitates a shiner finish for improved aesthetics – something that is in high demand from patients today. As dentists we are always looking for more predictable ways to achieve natural-looking restorations as traditional methods don’t always achieve this. Discovering new concepts that enable me to provide the very best options for my patients, even in cases that are tricky to treat with traditional techniques, is therefore very important to me.

The training for the Bioclear Method was brilliant; really concise and comprehensive. We covered all the theory behind the concept and saw videos before getting hands-on. The trainer – Claire Burgess – was excellent. She was really helpful and supportive, enthusiastically sharing her own experience by demonstrating a variety of possible challenges and discussing how to prevent and overcome them.Following the training, all delegates had access to a dedicated WhatsApp group, which has been extremely helpful. It provides an opportunity to see how others are finding it in practice and to share top tips.

Having bought the kit, I have started to use the Bioclear Method in my practice. In the cases completed so far, my patients have been wowed and my colleagues have been impressed. It’s definitely important to follow the treatment sequence very closely in order to get the best results. Getting the details right during the set up for treatment is essential – only with the right rubber dams and matrices in place, and the right restorative products, does it work as well as it should. That’s why I believe the training is so crucial for anyone interested in trying it. Like any new technique, it requires concentration and experience when you’re starting out, but I have certainly been able to achieve the results I wanted.

I also enjoyed using Filtek Supreme XTE flowable restorative from 3M Oral Care and am about to order some more specifically for this technique. As products from 3M were recommended on the training course, I think it’s important to not change the approach in any way for the best results. In addition, I found all the recommended suppliers to be very supportive and have even sent information to my colleagues who are interested as well.

All in all, I think the Bioclear Method is a really exciting addition to my restorative dentistry armamentarium. With the right training, products and technique, you can achieve fantastic results.
