Make beautiful, functional smiles a reality with the BACD

“My vision is to equip dentists with the skills to translate their version of a beautiful smile into reality.” Dr Sam Jethwa will be addressing delegates in the BACD Aesthetic & Digital Dentist Theatre at the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show in May. His session will focus on helping dentists to overcome two of the biggest challenges they currently face regarding smile makeovers.
Director of Membership at the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) and an award-winning cosmetic dentist, Dr Jethwa is a qualified clinical teacher with a Postgraduate Diploma in clinical education. He lectures and provides hands-on training to dentists in the UK and internationally on the topic of smile design, occlusion and the methods of creating natural, predictable smiles, with a strong focus on minimal and no preparation porcelain techniques. Dr Jethwa places around a thousand porcelain restorations a year and so has developed protocols for aesthetic and functional success. He founded The Bespoke Smile Academy, providing training for dentists in the UK and Germany, and is a key opinion leader for DMG dental materials. Dr Jethwa shares his knowledge on social media as one of the most prominent dentists in the UK on Instagram.
“My lecture will consist of creative, tried and tested solutions and protocols to satisfy the two biggest challenges that exist in smile makeover treatment: function and aesthetics,” he says. “Ensuring that a smile makeover meets both functional and aesthetic expectations – of not only the patient, but also the dentist – can be difficult. While these are not new challenges, the solutions are becoming harder to deliver. Patient expectation continues to increase with the expansion of visual social media platforms and the wide reach that cosmetic dentistry has today.
“During my session I will tackle these challenges using case examples and explaining a handmade trial smile technique for minimal to no preparation porcelain restorations. I will also discuss the treatment planning of high demand aesthetic cases, artistry, lab communication, materials and design of ultra-thin porcelain veneers.”
As with many types of dental treatment, planning is key to ensuring the very best result for every patient. Dr Jethwa will consider the impact of effective treatment planning in overcoming common challenges with smile makeovers.
“Fail to plan, plan to fail,” he says. “Treatment needs to be planned extremely carefully to achieve long-lasting results. As dentists we must have a shared destination with our patient – without this we cannot determine confidently what we need to do. Cosmetic treatment planning must take into account the patient’s facial features and facial asymmetry. The clinician must understand how dental smile design fits into this in order to ensure that the resulting smile matches the facial aesthetics.”
Another topic up for discussion during Dr Jethwa’s session will be minimal or no preparation porcelain veneers. He comments on the benefits of such techniques for patients:
“The preservation of natural tooth tissue is key to ensuring that cosmetic enhancements are emotionally empowering for patients and are completed using the least preparation possible. The techniques that allow super thin porcelain veneers can ensure a long-lasting result with minimal destruction and beautiful, natural aesthetics.”
The BACD Aesthetic & Digital Dentist Theatre will present an array of leading speakers who will cover a wide range of subjects relevant to all dentists that strive for excellent aesthetic, stable and functional treatment outcomes. The inspirational two-day programme will be complemented by the many other theatres across the conference, as well as the extensive trade floor with more than 450 dental manufacturers and suppliers. Dr Jethwa adds:
“Any networking, educational and/or social events that bring a community of dental professionals and team members together is always something I encourage. The British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show has an excellent line-up of lectures – especially in the BACD Aesthetic & Digital Dentist Theatre. The quality of the line-up this year is incredibly strong and the lectures are conveniently short to enable delegates to hear several each day. Usually, seeing these dentists speak either requires a conference ticket or a place on a dental course, but this is free to attend. The BACD is constantly providing the best in terms of education and this year is not one to miss.
“I am really looking forward to this event. Along with the BACD Annual Conference, the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show is a highlight of the BACD calendar.”
The British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show 2020 will be held on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th May –Birmingham NEC, co-located with DTS.
