The debate continues…
NewsPosted by: Dental Design 16th April 2020
There is quite some debate in the dental industry as to whether dental hygienists should be/are supported by a dental nurse during patient appointments. The advantages of dental nursing support centre around quality patient care, but there are still challenges to overcome in the area for many dental hygienists across the UK.
The British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show is always a great place to join such conversations and debates. The event will provide a platform for individuals to get the latest information and ideas in a wide range of areas. It will also facilitate discussions and enable professionals to ask their own questions of the speakers and their colleagues.
In the Hygienist & Therapist Symposium, Marina Harris will bring the conversation about dental nursing support for dental hygienists to the fore. About her session, she says:
“The lack of such support for dental hygienists in practice has been a long-standing issue in the profession. However, there has never been a clear picture of how many dental hygienists are impacted. Until now, we also hadn’t recorded these professionals’ attitudes towards having or not having dental nursing support.
“I will be sharing the findings of a recent BSDHT study into the extent of dental nursing support for dental hygienists in the UK. The survey offers greater insight into the issue and what people think about it. By sharing the findings, I hope to help dispel some of the myths that exist around the topic. As such, I hope that delegates will use the study as evidence to support their request for any changes in their practices. The aim is to improve the standard of patient care that can be delivered on a daily basis, while also enhancing the well-being of dental hygienists themselves.”
The Hygienist & Therapist Symposium will be supported by the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) on the Friday and the British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT) on the Saturday. The involvement of these professional organisations ensures the lecture programme remains relevant and of the highest quality for delegates.
