Dentist costs contribute to surprising inflation for July

Against all odds, and the best guesses of many, the UK experienced an unexpected jump in inflation in July, to 1% according to the BBC. Contributing factors included a rise in petrol prices as many of us take to the roads again, the charge for a haircut, and an increase in the cost of visiting the dentist for a private appointment.

Yahoo Finance reports that across the country we’ve witnessed a 7.4% surge in the cost of dental services. The price increases for both dentists and hairdressers can, of course, be attributed in part to the cost of ensuring the environments are Covid-secure, following government guidelines. In dental settings in particular, the extra cost of protective equipment and physical-distancing now needed will have seen prices rising for customers out of necessity.
