During the past year, dentistry has proven itself to be a highly adaptable business. After all, practices have had to survive a national lockdown and adapt to a slew of changes in regulations that the Coronavirus pandemic has wrought across the industry. Still, dental practices survive.
However, these challenges are far from over. With new government restrictions and the introduction of the tier system and regional lockdowns, dental practices will need to be prepared to face what comes next by thinking outside the box.

Patients are the lifeblood of your practice, and during these times it’s crucial that you keep them up to date with any changes in your services and what this means for them. As such, any restrictions that have to be actioned or any new innovations that they should be aware of have to be properly communicated to them, especially if you want these changes to succeed.

In this case, your social media channels, website, and staff need to be constantly updated so that patients can easily access the information they need. In these times it’s likely that many people are already feeling overwhelmed and will be more prone to avoid making dental appointments if they are unsure how to proceed or how safe your practice is. It is vital to prevent this if people are to receive the care they need.
Branching out to bring in new business
Marketing has never been more essential, and although the demand for general dentistry is higher than ever due to restrictions, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take advantage of the demand for other treatments that this global event has created.
For example, you may already be aware that the pandemic has boosted the desire for cosmetic procedures such as tooth-whitening due to people having to look at themselves more during online meetings,[i] but did you know that other treatments such as dental implants are booming in popularity too? It seems that due to the higher number of extractions being performed due to lack of access during the pandemic, more people are needing dental implants than ever before.[ii]
As such, now is the perfect time to explore these opportunities and see if offering these treatments is a viable route for your business. You may be surprised at how much of a difference expanding your treatment offerings can make to your practice, especially if you tap into what patients are currently looking for.
Flexibility and contingency
Arguably one of the more interesting impacts of the pandemic has been that businesses have had to look at their existing work models and adapt them in order to survive. For office workers this has meant working from home and having online meetings, while for other industries it has meant building more of an online presence and changing the way they reach out to potential customers and deal with orders.
Dentistry is a face to face industry by necessity, so it can be difficult to know how to adapt in order to make treating patients during this time simpler.
