At the core of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) is its commitment to helping members to expand in their careers, learn new skills and feel confident in their professional lives.

That’s why, for this year’s Oral Health Conference (OHC), the BSDHT has scheduled a number of sessions that are specifically about developing life skills that can be utilised throughout the whole course of people’s career and beyond!

Here are just some of the exciting sessions scheduled for this November:

SEE and be Seen

The theme of this year’s OHC is SEE and be Seen. SEE stands for – Skills, Engagement, Evolve – three messages that the Society has woven into every session to produce a diverse and engaging programme that has something to appeal to everyone.

In the spirit of these messages, one of the first sessions for delegates is titled ‘SEE – Skills, Engagement, Evolve’ and has been specifically designed to enthuse and inspire delegates about these three main concepts. This lecture is a great chance for professionals to learn about what they can expect from this year’s OHC as well as receive deeper insight into why these three areas have been chosen and what they could mean for their careers moving forwards.

Confidence in presentations

Many people find public speaking daunting. After all, it’s a skill that requires confidence, preparation and a deep understanding of how to present information in a way that audiences find engaging, insightful and interesting.

Many dental hygienists and dental therapists will want to give presentations at some point during their career. Whether this is to share oral health information in front of local schools or even producing your own educational content at events – being able to create and deliver an effective oral presentation can open all sorts of new avenues in your career.

Having the confidence to stand up in front of people and deliver your thoughts is something that can benefit you in every aspect of your life. For example, you can use this skill to become a speaker at the clubs you attend or to ensure you can deliver an excellent toast at a wedding.

The BSDHT is welcoming Dr Debbie Reed to host a session called ‘Presenting: from the inception of an idea to giving the presentation – an introduction to delivering an effective oral presentation’. This session has been put together to help delegates understand every aspect of the presentation process and will inevitably be a valuable resource for many in attendance!

Professional sustainability

As a dental hygienist or dental therapist, it is important to understand the worth that your profession brings to the dental practice and how you can utilise your skills to ensure that your team and patients are aware of how indispensable you are.

After all, with our ever-expanding scope of practice and the growing significance of skill mix, this opens a number of exciting opportunities for sustainability within your career.

At this year’s OHC, Laura McClune will be encouraging professionals to think more broadly about their career position and the importance of acquiring new skills for personal growth. Titled ‘The disposable dental hygienist? Professional sustainability and personal growth’, this insightful session will give individuals a lot of food for thought!

Wellness throughout the show

Alongside these sessions, this year’s show will also include a number of opportunities for professionals to concentrate on their personal wellbeing. For example, throughout the duration of the event there will be hands-on workshops titled ‘Ikigai oral health programme: giving your life new meaning and fulfilment’.

Championing the teachings of ikigai, which is a Japanese concept that focuses on finding meaning and direction in your home and professional life, these workshops are a great way to get some perspective and to prioritise your own values, giving you the tools you need to find fulfilment, not only in your professional undertakings, but also your personal life as well.

In a similar vein, on the second day of the show there will be an early morning Pilates session for those who want to centre their mind, body and spirit before a day of learning. Headed by Deborah Stratford, this Pilates session is a great option for those who want a refreshing, healthy start to the day.

A world of possibilities

This year’s OHC is definitely a show not to be missed.. With special delegate fees available for recently qualified professionals (2019-2021), students of the profession, members of the Society and more, there’s never been a better opportunity to expand your personal skills with the BSDHT!
