Lifestyle factors can have a big impact on patients’ risk of developing mouth cancer. As such it’s important to have open conversations with patients about risk factors, and conduct regular oral examinations to check for symptoms.

A German study[i] reveals that clinicians also use the system to test patients who they deem to be at a heightened risk of mouth cancer, due to use of alcohol and tobacco, as a tool to encourage behaviour changes. The system also provides a baseline test result for patients.
