Congratulations again to Amy Ciobanu, dental nurse, on winning the 2023 ATU Dental Graduate Award, which we were delighted to sponsor once again.

We caught up with Amy to find out a bit more about her and her passion for dental nursing:

Why did you choose to go into dental nursing?

I was interested in studying general nursing for some time but didn’t want to do shift work while my children were small. My friend suggested dental nursing to me as an alternative. I knew next to nothing about the career at the time, but as I looked into it I realised it would suit me quite well.

What do you enjoy most about the role so far?

I really enjoy the patient interaction. It’s nice getting to know the regular patients and being able to help people. I find all aspects of dentistry really interesting and, in particular, love assisting with the more unusual procedures.

What were the biggest challenges and rewards of your training?

The biggest challenge I had while at college was balancing studying and assignments while being a single parent, and all the commitments and responsibilities that come with that. The biggest reward was realising that I made the right choice in studying dental nursing: that I was good at it, found it interesting and it suited me.

What did it mean for you to be recognised for the award at the end of last year?

I felt really honoured that I was chosen for the student award as there were so many great dental nurses in my year. It was really nice to know that my hard work was recognised and appreciated.

Looking ahead in your career, what are you most looking forward to?

Since I graduated, I have also qualified in dental radiography with University College Cork. I am quietly ambitious and do plan on continuing to add to my skill set wherever I can. I am looking forward to progressing within the field, whether that means becoming a senior dental nurse, practice manager or dental hygienist.
