Community Dental Services CIC (CDS)’s Oral Health Improvement teams are raising public awareness of mouth cancer, through events held to support Mouth Cancer Action Month.
The dedicated oral health teams of CDS will be taking part in various events and providing important information about the disease, including how to self-check, and the common signs and symptoms to look out for. To further promote good oral health, the CDS teams will also be distributing toothbrushing packs at select events.
Mouth Cancer Action Month, a campaign led by the Mouth Cancer Foundation and the Oral Health Foundation is a month-long event which aims to educate the public about mouth cancer and promote healthy oral practices.
Last year, a staggering 10,825 individuals in the UK were diagnosed with Mouth Cancer. This statistic highlights the urgency to raise awareness and bring about positive change. Tobacco use is the leading cause of mouth cancer, with excessive alcohol consumption also being a major risk factor; with those who smoke and drink 30 times more likely to develop the disease.[1]
Jennifer Baitup, Strategic Oral Health Lead at CDS said: “Mouth Cancer Action Month is a fantastic opportunity to focus on oral cancers and raise awareness of the importance of self-checking for signs like changes in the mouth such as ulcers that do not heal after three weeks and changes to the tongue and gums. We also stress the importance of stopping smoking and keeping alcohol consumption to recommended limits. Our team of 13 employees working across five counties will be supporting and promoting Mouth Cancer Action Month by training staff at care homes, societies, and varying support groups in addition to events being held for the public.”
