This World Oral Health Day, on 20 March, the Oral Health Foundation is drawing attention to the often-overlooked link between oral health and mental well-being.

This year’s theme, A Happy Mouth is a Happy Mind, is an invitation to reframe the conversation around oral health – not just as a clinical concern, but as an essential part of overall mental and emotional health.

As dental professionals, we are acutely aware of the physical implications of poor oral health, but its impact on psychological well-being is equally significant. Conditions like gum disease and tooth loss can contribute to anxiety, social isolation, and diminished self-esteem. As a sector, we must expand our approach to care, offering not just treatment, but support that fosters better mental health outcomes for patients.

Dr. Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation, says: “As dental professionals, we have the unique opportunity to address both the physical and psychological needs of our patients. While we are often focused on disease prevention and treatment, it is crucial that we recognise the deeper connections between oral health and mental well-being.

“Helping patients maintain a healthy smile is not only about reducing the risk of disease; it’s about enhancing their overall quality of life and supporting their mental resilience. By taking a more holistic approach, we can help break the cycle where oral health challenges negatively impact mental health and vice versa.”
