Community Dental Services CIC (CDS) has launched a children’s competition for 6- to 11-year-olds living in Essex, Lincolnshire, Norfolk & Waveney, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Suffolk or Slough; to help raise awareness of the importance of developing good oral health habits from a young age.

Supporting The Oral Health Foundation’s National Smile Month taking place between 12th May to 12th June, CDS is asking children to write a short story or poem about teeth, whether it be about tooth brushing, eating tooth friendly foods and drinks or the Tooth Fairy; with the winner receiving an electric toothbrush, book voucher and will have their story or poem turned into a video, narrated by themselves.

Jennifer Baitup is CDS’s Strategic Oral Health Lead, championing the importance of good oral health and supervised toothbrushing programmes within early year’s settings and schools, as well as promoting good oral health in children and adults with special needs and in care settings: “National Smile Month 2025’s theme is Feed Your Smile – focussing on the connection between diet and oral health. With an increasing number of children experiencing dental decay, we’re encouraging young creative minds to share their stories or poems to encourage their peers to make smart food and drink choices that promote good oral health. We are excited to read the entries and look forward to sharing the important messages far and wide.”

Children aged 6 to 11 years in the participating areas are asked to submit their entry (under 400 words) by 12th June 2025.

Further information and full rules of entry can be found on the CDS oral health web page: Oral Health Improvement – Community Dental Services or by emailing: oralhealthimprovement@cds-cic.nhs.uk
